Devin Miles is a leading figure in contemporary German Pop Art. Born in 1961, he pays homage to traditional Pop Art while adding his own unique touch. Unlike the industrial Pop Art productions of the 1950s and 1960s, his silkscreens are meticulously handmade, making each piece unique.
Pop Art, often associated with mass consumption and popular icons, aimed to make art accessible to all. Andy Warhol, with his famous silkscreen prints, played a key role in this democratization of art. Devin Miles perpetuates this spirit while integrating contemporary and personal elements into his creations. His works are vibrant tributes to the icons of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, such as Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Romy Schneider, James Dean, Brigitte Bardot, John F. Kennedy and Steve McQueen.
Miles' multi-layered collages of images, fragments of writing, emblems, logos and accessories typical of the era create a rare emotional depth and authenticity. These works don't just recall the glamour of the era; they tell stories, inviting viewers to discover new relationships and make their own interpretations.
For some years now, Miles has been experimenting with Plexiglas underlays to add a three-dimensional dimension to his works, demonstrating remarkable craftsmanship. He also uses elaborate techniques for his 24-carat gold creations, where intensive polishing and the use of glass microbeads to mattify details add unrivalled brilliance and purity. Finally, his works are sublimated by a bath of fine liquid gold, a unique manufacturing process that gives each piece a dazzling finish.
Devin Miles is a true storyteller, creating powerful paintings that resonate with the narratives and myths of twentieth- and twenty-first-century pop culture, while leaving much to the viewer's interpretation. His works captivate and continue to fascinate with their depth and authenticity.
