Presentation
Edouard Castres, painter, born in Geneva, in the district of Saint-Gervais, on June 21, 1838, and died in Étrembières on June 28, 1902, is best known for the realization of the gigantic panorama of Lucerne (112 meters by 10) which recounts the crossing of the Swiss border by the French army of General Bourbaki during the winter of 1871, at the end of the Franco-German war.
Few people know, however, that this great artist, who rests at the foot of the chapel in the cemetery of Étrembières, the town in which he lived his last years, bequeathed to us a substantial and varied body of work.
