Painter of classical training, Christian Vidal exhibited for a long time in Morocco, subscribing to the post-orientalist movement which, still alive in this country, naturally permeated his imagination.
Now living in Roussillon, Christian Vidal has finally rediscovered his Catalan roots to reconnect with a rich cultural tradition which has allowed him to recharge his batteries.
His inspiration, although essentially figurative, sometimes gets carried along on the paths of abstract suggestion. This, coupled with greater freedom of tone and movement, invites Christian Vidal to explore the range of pictorial possibilities while mobilizing the diversity of contemporary graphic resources, in a vision that is both serene and poetic.
Christian Vidal paints ideas, views of the mind where the poetry of reality is distanced, evoked in an underlying way, in a semi-figurative expression. Therefore, far from being anecdotal evidence, the title given to the work asserts itself as the driving principle of its genesis and sometimes provides a path for its immediate understanding. However, it is up to the public to understand Christian Vidal's work through the prism of his own imagination, most often rich in harmonics as subtle as they are unsuspected …
As Pierre Soulages puts it so well: “The work lives from the gaze it is given. It is not limited to what it is, nor to whoever produced it, it is also made of whoever looks at it".
