Biography
Born in 1972, Gérald Engelvin is a self-taught French painter. Painting since adolescence, he gradually forged his personal style, nourished by numerous visits to museums, meetings with artists and the passionate reading of treatises on painting gleaned from booksellers. His work was noticed very early on by Alexandre Leadouze in particular, who at the age of 29 devoted his first major solo exhibition to him in Paris, in his famous gallery on avenue Matignon. Numerous exhibitions followed in France and abroad (United States, Luxembourg, Japan, China, Switzerland, England). First marked by hyperrealism and the school of reality painters, Gérald Engelvin's painting imperceptibly detaches itself over the years by opening up to an interesting work on the material, served by a delicate palette and a sober and refined invoice. His current work evokes both Balthus, Chardin, Picasso pink period, Hooper, Hammershoi and Vermeer, but also the great fresco painters of the quattrocento for his most recent works.
