Bianca Caloi di Grassi, a Brazilian artist born in São Paulo and based in Monaco since 2014, explores the emotional depth within a rational world through her art. She delves beyond binary contrasts to uncover life's nuanced messages. Her pieces encapsulate a delicate balance between the structured world of code and the exploration of emotions, aiming to infuse life with both realism and poetry.
Having earned a BA Graphic Design degree from Central Saint Martins, London, in 2010, and a Master's in Fine Arts from Camberwell College of Arts in 2017, Bianca has exhibited her primarily wall-based reliefs and drawings in the UK, Brazil, Japan, Monaco and France.
Bianca's art transcends logic, evoking feelings beyond reason. Embracing imperfections and flexibility within obsessions, her work speaks of hope, which, for her, is the ability to see between zero and one.
Her artistic practices:
Primarily drawings and wall-based reliefs, where the colour white is always the core.
In the series called Binary Emotions, she mainly focuses on geometric constructions through a mix of sculpture and painting using binary code. She plays with blocks or anything symbolizing opposites to represent the ones and zeros in a binary code. As one plays with the code, new words will be created. Binary code represents duality: black or white, on and off, this or that. So simple, so logical, yet it carries complex messages behind it. There are infinite possibilities - of feelings and thoughts. Even when trying to limit ourselves to one thing or another, it's noticed that behind each logical process, there is freedom and many hidden thoughts behind the blocks.
In a world where opinions are so polarized and everything tends to be so binary, it is crucial to seek a middle ground. Emotion is not binary; there is a complete spectrum to it. It's always possible to set aside our limitations and ensure that we are learning every day.
Her series of drawings entitled Structured Flow, represents a path under construction, a journey where the pen is in control but not the path. The lines usually follow a logic structure but, at times, they take unexpected turns, emphasizing the acceptance of imperfections. This series, for her, encapsulates life's intricacies and the potential for flexibility within a rigid structure. Her fascination with multiple lines, each following its distinct path, allows imperfections to articulate their narratives and tell us stories.
