Gaston Chaissac (1910-1964) was a French artist and poet known for his unique and unconventional approach to art. Born in Avallon, France, Chaissac initially worked as a farmer before turning to art in his 40s. He was a self-taught artist who rejected formal training and embraced a raw and instinctive style. Chaissac's works spanned various mediums, including painting, drawing, and sculpture. His art often incorporated found objects and materials, creating assemblages that merged abstraction with figurative elements. Chaissac's imagery was often playful and imaginative, influenced by folk art and the natural environment. Chaissac was considered a member of the Art Brut movement. His writing was often featured in “La Nouvelle Revue française." Despite limited recognition during his lifetime, Chaissac's work gained posthumous acclaim and is now recognized for its unique vision and contribution to the art world.
