Agwunwa Theophilus Chinonso was born in 1990, He hails from Ejeme Aniorgor, Aniocha South, Delta State, Nigeria. He graduated with a distinction from Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi in Edo State where he studied Arts and Industrial Design (Painting). His works are an exploration of numerous waste materials most especially fabric in the execution of his paintings. He doesn't simply conceptualize daily activities and human state of mind in his paintings, he transforms waste materials into wealth (beautiful works of art).
At his tender age, he discovered his gift as an artist, both visual and performing art drawing almost everything he sees around his environment and practicing musical instruments as well.
Artist Statement
As a Nigerian-based artist, I see my art as a form of up-cycling because I transform Ankara fabrics (African prints) both old and new into beautiful paintings that portray daily activities, love, and a human state of mind. The use of colorful Ankara materials with lovely motifs and patterns characterizes my unique style.
Ankara fabric was chosen as my primary medium of expression because of the lovely patterns on it and how it captures the essence of my work. The use of vibrant colors of fabrics in my painting depicts hope as it tends to encourage the viewers to stay focused and that there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
