Jeanne-Sarah

Trained at ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres in ceramics and product design, then in enamel chemistry with Hélèna Klug and in filmmaking with Thierry Fouquet, she taught Applied Arts for a time before opening her workshop in Finistère, in Pont Coblant Pleyben in 2010.

After long striving for a technical and classical mastery of the chemistry of enamel and the usual form, she finally returned to her first loves of modeling and turning. Jeanne-Sarah is a shaper, a modeler.

The choice of sandstone is intuitive, sensitive more than technical. Affectionate what remains of the raw and frank in it, especially when it is chamotte, Jeanne-Sarah gives this clay an appearance which is not the one traditionally given to it: instead of the heaviness and rusticity that we give it, it takes it towards lightness, movement, finesse thus obtaining a result which is not only sophisticated and delicate as porcelain would be, because the stoneware retains its roughness, its character.

The often present lace is seen as the symbol of ancestral traditions, of outdated delicacies. Transposed onto clay it can be diverted, reinvented, shaken up. It seems ready to move, to unfold, less fixed, it is different, more alive, less delicate, rougher and more contemporary.

Jeanne-Sarah's creative threads are the feminine and the expression of movement, between representation or evocation, playing on duality: raw/refined, material/smooth. As an attempt to reconcile grace and power, finesse and spontaneity...
