Biography
Freida Lock (1902-1962) was a British artist born in South Africa. She was born in Cheadle Hume, England, and emigrated to South Africa with her parents in 1921. They lived on a fruit farm in Stellenbosch.
She studied at the Heatherley School of Art and the Central School of Art in London in the early 1930s. It was there that she met Gregoire Boonzaier and Terence McCaw, and together with Lippy Lipshitz, Walter Battiss, Alexis Preller and herself they founded the group Die Nuwe in 1938 in Cape Town. She also spent time in Zanzibar from 1947 to 1949, where she made many sketches and portraits. She is known for her still lifes.
