Biography
After studying free painting at the Nuremberg Art Academy, Gerd Kanz went his own way without adhering to conventions or isms. Informel could be assumed to be the starting point of his development. If that were the case, then he has long since outgrown it. His pictures do not seek to negate forms; instead, the artist searches for forms in the formless and allows them to grow out of his painting with deliberation and inner vision.
Kanz has found his refuge in an old brewery on the outskirts of Untermerzbach, a tranquil village in the Lower Franconian Hassberge. This is the space for his work and for his other passion, gardening. The soft landscape and the garden provide him with balance and inspiration. Preparing the soil, sowing, growing, blossoming and decaying are the sources of inspiration for his work. He therefore likes to refer to his works as the "Essence of Growth".
