Biography
Filipe Curado began his artistic career in 1998 and since then has been collaborating with multiple art galleries and cultural institutions. He is represented in several public and private collections, having held more than 50 individual and collective exhibitions. He is a multifaceted sculptor who presents in his career an incessant search to work with new themes and different materials. However, it was in his series of tree sculptures, exploring all the morphology and symbology, where he gained greater recognition.
For the artist, art is a reflection of society. It shows in a more impartial way how we are and how we live, but it was sculpture that always existed in his imagination. At the age of 16, he made his first sculpture and has never stopped since. It intends to convey life as you see it, or as you feel it. Interpret and register it according to your point of view.
Initially, he considers that the process is intuitive, the first idea of what he wants to do appears, then some deconstructions of the idea arise and, sometimes, even conflicts between several ideas, leading the work to an evolution and mental construction. After idealizing what he intends to do, the process is more physical and involves a lot of technical work until the sculpture is materialized.
In general, it relates to universal and comprehensive themes. The tree has been a recurring theme, but not the only one. Along his path, he always made pieces with the image of the tree. It is an element with which he identifies, a symbol of life, of longevity... He likes its spiritual and sacred character. It is an unavoidable image and cannot detach itself from this theme.
He essentially works with stone, namely white Portuguese marble, but likes to explore other materials such as resin, metals and wood.
