Presentation
Born in 1977 in Gwang Ju, Korea, Hur Kyung Ae lives and works in Evreux, France. After having studied painting and printmaking in Korea, her love of the French language and culture led her to settle in France in 2003 to pursue her training in Paris. It is there that she experimented with new artistic media, and discovered her preference for painting.
However, Hur Kyung Hae is not quite a painter, although painting is the material she uses to create layers of colour on canvases. She is not quite a sculptor either, although she carves and digs into these layers of paint. Her works are divided into two parts, first a uniform layer of colour, electric blue, scarlet red, lemon yellow, bright white, and then a multitude of coloured lines, resembling an explosion of coloured sparks, which seem to signify the dispersion of colour on the canvas, the irreducible disappearance of the material. The separation between the two is not clear, on the contrary, the unity seems to dissolve into the multitude thanks to the artist's labour.
Linked to the new generation of the Dansaekhwa movement - this Korean movement dating back to the 1970s and bringing together artists seeking new ways of understanding and working with painting as a material - Hur Kyung Hae is becoming more and more recognised on the international scene. She has been awarded several prizes in France and abroad, and has exhibited in numerous galleries in Europe and Asia, as well as at international fairs such as Art Paris and BRAFA.
