Ludwig Willroider, born January 11, 1845 in Villach, Carinthia and died May 22, 1910 in Bernried am Starnberger See, is an Austrian painter, landscape painter and printmaker. His brother Josef was also a painter and printmaker. He lived in Bavaria.
Willroider is the son of an architect with whom he learned drawing, then he perfected his skills with his brother Josef, who was seven years older than him, and with Ludwig Canziani (1821-1891). He then went to Munich at the age of twenty-three, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. He followed the teaching of Eduard Schleich (1812-1874) and especially the landscape designer Adolf Heinrich Lier (de) (1826-1882). He also met Carl Ebert (1821-1885) who accompanied him on several trips. The latter belongs to the circle of relatives of Christian Mali (1832-1906) and Anton Braith (1836-1905), specialists in outdoor painting and who occupy a large workshop in the district of Schwabing.
Viktring Castle Park, 1891
Ludwig Willroider exhibits regularly at the Ice Palace in Munich (Glaspalast), where he is favorably received by critics and receives medals, for his Bavarian landscapes or his native region. He often stayed in Carinthia and especially in Viktring and also made some study trips to the Netherlands.
He was named honorary member of the Munich academy in 1883, and professor of the academy by Prince-Regent Leopold of Bavaria in 1886.
