Jean-Claude Blanc is one of the most appreciated and well-known painters in Haiti.
He was born on 24 April 1965 into a modest family. His father was a watchman and his mother a vegetable seller. His father supplemented his income by becoming a renowned distiller, specialising in the distillation of "clairin", a powerful and cheap rum much appreciated by Haitians.
Jean-Claude started to paint in the early 80's and joined the "Arc en Ciel" workshop in Cap-Haitian in 1983 where he was a student of Laetitia Schutt, a German painter who founded this school with Max Gerbier.
His works are now present in almost all the galleries in Haiti, from Cap-Haïtien to Port-au-Prince, notably at the Monnin Gallery and the Nader Gallery, which have contributed to making his work known abroad.
Having settled in the capital a few years ago, Blanc lives solely on his work as an artist, and many art professionals are now interested in his work, such as the Macondo gallery in Pittsburgh and the Tropical Art gallery in Sanary, France.
