"My paintings are places of refuge for the present: they bring back the beauty of the imperfect in a world where quantity, consumption and the forgetting of reality are commonplace. The artist also creates them for herself , because being a woman is still a serious "state of threat", as Witzer says: "Here and now we need spaces in which poetry, beauty, color, fullness of meaning, yes, personal splendor in daily life can touch the soul."
Brigitte Witter works spaciously and likes a large scale. As an essential technique, she uses a kind of monotype, which is not aimed at printing, but uses the original printing plate as a painting tool. By applying the paint using a spatula or other utensils, it creates an independent colorful result.
"My painting is focused on the play of color and delicacy. On a large scale, I tame my will to express myself, I abandon myself to the here and now. With a wild courage for color, I walk joyfully and fearlessly with uncertainty. That's why my monotypes stand."
Small formats, called "by-catches", are created by wiping the printing plate with an application of residual ink onto individual prepared sheets. Witzer, on the other hand, obtains the "extra cuts" using a movable passepartout, which allows her to identify certain parts of the image that attract her in larger works.
The artist works mainly on paper, which appears to him to be a material as fragile as man himself, ephemeral and at the same time generous. Sometimes in collage on canvas, which leads it to rework and become a surface again.
"What I create is totally imperfect and therefore never perfect. Perfection is a machine quality that produces a dead, lifeless and static beauty. This kind of beauty does not touch me."
Brigitte Witter's works are part of the tradition of abstract expressionism. Emotion and spontaneity are more important to her than perfection, proportion and regulation.
"I am interested in sensory perception, perception with all the senses: hearing, taste, smell - not only, but also sight, touch. His paintings feature sculptural elements, textures and raised patterns Elevations such as mountain climbing aids, which only allow a recognizable path up the steep face.
