Matthieu Astoux
Biography
Matthieu Astoux was born in Antibes on December 3, 1965.
He continued to study ceramic decorator after the Jules Ferry high school in Cannes, then spent two years at the School of Decorative Arts in Limoges. There he experiments with enamelling and glazes, fascinated by the variety of possible combinations, he devotes himself to color on this material.
At the same time, he learned engraving techniques at the Atelier du Safranier d'Antibes: etchings, dry points, linocuts and aquatints.
It is completed with internships at Villa Thiole in Nice.
He then specialized in engraving and set up his workshop in Cap d'Antibes.
Initially working with metal: copper, zinc ... with a dry point, he produces etchings then opens up to engraving on all types of materials, with all types of tools: cutter ... on cardboard, wood, hardboard using carborundum, a technique which allows abrasive zones to be built on the plates to be engraved which will retain the ink more particularly and on which the paper, when going through the press, will print strongly.
Everything can be engraved and exploration fascinates him, inking does the rest.
Often inked in juxtaposition of several plates and different colors, they are printed in small, limited and numbered series.
