Catalina Sampol

My beginnings in art date back to 1976, when I trained in various workshops of well-known artists in Mallorca. Between 1985 and 1998 I combined my work as a psychologist with painting, until various circumstances led me to dedicate myself exclusively to the latter activity. My painting style began as figurative, but over time it has evolved towards abstraction with the use of new techniques. I am mainly inspired by nature, the sea, stones, the earth, in all its textures, shapes and states, which are the guiding thread of my work. I combine different techniques that range from the use of acrylics, oils, pastels, as well as different materials such as sand, cement, natural pigments and various oxides, allowing me to create a material painting with a great chromatic diversity. I would like to highlight one of my latest series, “Desde el aire”, in which I project my zenithal vision of nature. Contemplating the sea and the coast from above, its waves and breakers, the land or the clouds, and how they converge and interact with each other, allows me to capture on the canvas a unique and personal perspective and vision. The series “Piedras” and “Fósiles” arise from the interest and curiosity for their shapes and the deformations produced over time, as well as for their chromatic diversity. “Salitre” is the projection of intimate sensations of childhood, through contact with the sea.
