Presentation
Robert Crumb is a cartoonist. Born into a typical middle-class family, Crumb was exposed throughout his childhood to the illusions and frustrations of the American Dream. A violent environment feeds his inhibitions very early on and, under the decisive influence of his older brother, he finds in drawing a refuge tailored to his measure. The simultaneous discovery of drugs and sexual freedom in the mid-1960s will serve as a trigger for a work free from all moral conventions. The misunderstanding that will make him an icon of the hippie movement, and the traumas of his childhood, will lead him to a kind of visionary disenchantment that has fueled for more than forty years an inspiration as varied as it is plethora. Known for his original lyrics and uncompromising subjects, he is the creator of Devil Girl, Mr. Natural, Zap Comics ... but also of Fritz the Cat, star of the X-rated cartoon by animator Ralph Bashki. Following Terry Zwigof's documentary Crumb, the cartoonist became a star of pop culture in the USA. He has lived in France for several years.
