Presentation
Mimmo Rotella (Domenico Rotella), (born Oct. 7, 1918, Catanzaro, Italy - died Jan. 8, 2006, Milan, Italy), is an Italian artist who was best known for his extravagant “double décollages,” which he crafted by ripping posters (particularly movie advertisements) off exterior walls, attaching the fragments to canvases, and then tearing off smaller pieces from the posters to create colourful, often amusing, collages.
Mimmo Rotella was the only Italian artist formally linked to the French Nouveau Réalistes artists, with whom he exhibited in the 1960s. Rotella studied art in Naples and held a Fulbright scholarship (1951–52) at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where he was admired for his experimental “phonetic” poetry.
He returned to Italy in 1953 and abandoned painting for his signature décollages and assemblages, into which he incorporated textiles and other materials. Later he experimented with acrylic paint and photographic elements. Rotella lived in Paris in the 1960s and ’70s, but in 1980 he settled in Milan.
