Keith Haring fearlessly addressed the pressing socio-political issues of his time through his art, taking a stand against racism, homophobia, apartheid in South Africa, and AIDS. Despite delving into these challenging themes, he infused his work with boundless energy and optimism. Influenced by New York City's graffiti and street art scene, he developed a distinctive style characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and simplified forms that resembled urban hieroglyphs, resonating with a wide audience during his lifetime and enduring after his death.
In 1989, just one year before his death in February 1990, Keith Haring introduced the Rare Pyramids series. This collection featured four silkscreens on anodized aluminum pyramids, produced in a limited edition of 30. Using contrasting hues of blue, yellow, teal, and gold, Haring depicted his trademark figures—genderless, raceless, and classless—symbolizing both humanity's virtues and vices.
Haring's characteristic figures and symbols are portrayed as a universal language of ciphers, celebrating life through ecstatic dance. The opulent figures are arranged within the large pyramid shape, forming an intricate, interconnected network against a single color background. Some figures and symbols are closely interlinked, while others stand solitary, resembling organic mosaic pieces inserted into the broader narrative lines. This diverse array of closely related figures and symbols within each pyramid showcases Haring's geometric approach to conveying potent moral narratives in his art.
The Rare Pyramids series elevates Haring's graffiti origins from New York's subway system onto an esteemed platform, gathering nearly all the characters from his extensive body of work. It epitomizes his use of modern hieroglyphics, drawing inspiration from ancient civilizations. By employing pyramids as a recurring motif, Haring aimed to create universally recognizable symbols with lasting impact, echoing the enduring legacy of ancient Egyptian pyramids as symbols of human resilience and imagination. For Haring, the pyramid symbolized an enigmatic force, perhaps once believed to harness energy.
Moreover, the pyramids served as a visual tool for Haring to confront societal marginalization, particularly evident in his poignant portrayal of the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic. Through their imposing scale and provocative imagery, the pyramids compel viewers to face these issues head-on and inspire action. Haring's commitment to activism extended beyond his art, as evidenced by his fundraising efforts for AIDS research, including a notable fundraiser held in memory of his friend Martin Burgoyne in 1986 at one of Haring's frequented nightclubs, the Pyramid Club.
