David Salle's "OverUnder" portfolio is a notable collection within his body of work. David Salle is an American painter and leading figure in the postmodern movement, known for his distinctive style that often juxtaposes disparate images and themes. The "OverUnder" portfolio, like much of Salle's work, features a mix of abstract and figurative elements, layered compositions, and a blend of high and low cultural references.

In this portfolio, Salle often explores themes of art history, popular culture, and personal expression, using a variety of media and techniques. The "OverUnder" works typically exhibit his signature approach of combining diverse visual elements to create complex, multi-layered pieces that challenge traditional notions of narrative and coherence in art.

David Salle's "Tree of Life" cycle, which includes the "OverUnder" portfolio, is a series of works that delve into complex themes related to existence, interconnectedness, and the human condition. The "Tree of Life" is a metaphor often used in various cultural, religious, and philosophical contexts to symbolize the interconnectedness of all life on Earth, growth, and the cycle of life and death.

Key Aspects of the "Tree of Life" Cycle:

Interconnected Imagery: Salle's works in this cycle are characterized by the juxtaposition of diverse and seemingly unrelated images, creating a tapestry that reflects the complexity and interconnectivity of life. He blends figures, symbols, and abstract forms, layering them to produce a sense of depth and continuity.

Multimedia Approach: Salle employs a variety of media in his works, combining painting, drawing, and sometimes collage techniques. This multimedia approach enhances the layered effect and allows for a richer exploration of themes.

Philosophical Themes: The "Tree of Life" cycle touches on themes of creation, growth, decay, and renewal. Salle often references art history, mythology, and contemporary culture, weaving these elements together to form a narrative that is both personal and universal.

Aesthetic Complexity: Salle's works are known for their aesthetic complexity. He often uses a bold color palette and intricate compositions to draw viewers into a contemplative experience. The visual complexity mirrors the thematic intricacy, encouraging viewers to explore multiple layers of meaning.

Symbolism and Metaphor: The use of the tree as a central metaphor in the cycle is significant. Trees are often seen as symbols of life, growth, and the passage of time. Salle's works might include literal depictions of trees or more abstract references, using the metaphor to explore human experiences and the natural world.

Significance of the "OverUnder" Portfolio within the Cycle:

Layering Technique: In the "OverUnder" portfolio, Salle's signature layering technique is prominent. This approach aligns with the overarching themes of the "Tree of Life" cycle, emphasizing the interconnectedness and layering of life experiences.

Visual and Conceptual Juxtaposition: The portfolio exemplifies Salle's ability to juxtapose visual and conceptual elements, creating a dynamic interplay between the seen and the unseen, the obvious and the hidden. This reflects the complex nature of life, where multiple layers of meaning coexist.

Engagement with the Viewer: Salle's works in this portfolio often engage viewers in a dialogue, challenging them to decipher the relationships between different elements and to contemplate their own interpretations of the interconnected themes.

David Salle's "Tree of Life" cycle, including the "OverUnder" portfolio, is a profound exploration of the interconnectedness of life, using a rich, layered visual language to delve into universal themes.

David Salle

Presentation

David Salle is a postmodernist painter born in the United States in Oklahoma in 1952.

font-family:">David Salle studies at the California Institute of the Arts.
line-height:107%;font-family:" arial",sans-serif"="" data-redactor-
line-height:107%;font-family:">John Baldessari is then one of his teachers, and teaches him collage techniques inspired by film editing. This technique allows Salle to train in plastic work on photography, a real starting point for his artistic career. The whole of New York discovered this young painter with a sulphurous style through his first series of sensual paintings and erotic photographs. The painting is crude and the representation realistic. The absence of modesty adds a touch of candor to his creations, contrasting deliciously with the eroticism of his work.

" arial",sans-serif"="">David Salle explores different fields, ranging from installation and performance to several collage techniques. The artist appropriates several periods of the history of art. So he is fond of video, cinematographic and photographic media that he revisits in his own way, incorporating references to classicism, romanticism, impressionism, modern art, or even expressionism. Already, he claims a stylistic freedom that the modernists sorely lack. Their too many constraints push him towards a new genre: post-modernism. Theorized by Charles Jencks, the movement ironically plays with the narrow codes of modern art. Postmoderns scoff at artistic conventions, especially those imposed in architectural and urban representation. At the same time, David Salle embarked on the path of the Trans-avant-garde, whose movement launched in 1970 advocated a return to traditional painting, in opposition to the advent of conceptualism and minimalism. David Salle is involved in all battles, and claims the right to inconsistency and the mixing of styles.

" arial",sans-serif"="">David Salle's work is based on a work of juxtaposition. Juxtaposition of materials, elements, supports, but also eras, styles, movements, arts ... Thus the artist evokes History, popular culture, the History of art, comics or the capitalist world. All the arts are represented, all styles, all eras, all backgrounds. Salle offers the viewer a homogenization of time and space, social classes and materials. His work is like a theatrical performance.

" arial",sans-serif"="">The artist won the American Rome Prize in Visual Arts in 2000. He is a member of the American Academy in Rome.
