David Hockney: Landscapes

We often associate the name David Hockney with his swimming pool artworks, but this is not his only area of expertise. He is actually a prolific landscape painter, and to this day produces artworks depicting nature and the countryside. And what a better way to paint landscapes than whilst observing them?

During the 90's the artist was living in Yorkshire, in the north of England, caring for his mother. The picturesque landscapes that surrounded his house served as a great source of inspiration. Equipped with his paintbrush and canvas, Hockney placed his canvas in nature and began painting outdoors. He often used photographs to help him capture the vibrant colors of the landscapes he was painting. He reimagined his surroundings by adding a touch of surrealism, all whilst retaining a level of expressionism within his brush strokes. Over time, his technique evolved and he started to use digital painting applications or to film the places he was passing by in his van. A large number of  his paintings are made up of multiple canvases, which together form one big artwork. The most impressive of these is Bigger Trees Near Warter ou Peinture en Plein Air pour l'âge Post-Photographique. This piece is made up of no more and no less than 60 canvases, in total measuring 4.60 x 12.20 m.

During his career, Hockney has painted many Yorkshire landscapes, Yosemite park in the United States, and even Normandy. Discover the landscape paintings of David Hockney, available on Artsper!
