Is there an artistic demiurge in the universe? This is always a sensitive question often brought up by the general public causing confuse in the aspects of science, philosophy and religion. It can easily remind us of the famous book of Stephen Hawking: “The Grand Design”. Certainly, art cannot explain everything, but sometimes, according to Nietzsche, when science encounters unknown, art will appear abruptly at the extreme point. Art helps us to understand better the unknown world, especially when it comes to the subconscious level. It is the charm of art, and is also the essence of photographer Bernhard Lang’s works.
Bernhard Lang was born in 1970, in Germany. After a period of apprenticeship at Photostudio Anker, he began his photograph career, with the accumulation of experience and the professional capabilities; Lang persisted his practice as always and gradually developed a broad horizon and an extraordinarily creative view. In 2010, Bernhard launched the project “Aerial Views”. It is a series of brilliant works, which are taken from the aerial view of coalmines, beaches and harbors, presented usual human behaviors with unusual angle of views. This year, the photos taken from the Adriatic coast between Rayenna and Rimini won one of the most influential awards in the entire photography industry - “Sony World Photography Awards”.
“The view of a bird’s eye exposes the fact that our human beings are just tiny and vulnerable creatures, we are not who we think we are.” said Lang. “Tiny and vulnerable creatures”, what an excellent comparison! In his opinion, we create, observe, suffer, however at the same time, we are also being created, observed, suffered by the mysterious eyes from somewhere above the seventh sky. What an ironic but realistic drama!
The photos from the series “Aerial Views”, which are sceneries of the opencast brown coalmine called “Tagebau Hambach” located in the state of North Rhine - Westphalia, Germany, compose the upcoming solo exhibition of the artist in Galerie Liusa Wang in June. Every piece of work shows coalmine large to 35 kilometers, which makes Lang the first artist who takes inspiration from Tagebau Hambach coalmine. The huge reclaimers are like “monsters” in the simple and cold surrounding, with thousands of miles of coal soil, present us the perfect astonishing natural beauty without any efforts. From those photos, we are about to witness the secret power from the universe with our actual eye!
