Demanding and committed artist, Carmen Selma is exhibiting for the first time at the Atelier Piece Unique. In her paintings, she explores the past to decipher the present. Carmen Selma's canvases exude an impressive force. Characters with a haughty look, bright colors, energetic touches, in an expressionist vein, the artist paints his country, Spain. It evokes the civil war, the dictatorship of Franco, but also family events, traditions that mark life, such as baptisms, weddings ... For her first solo exhibition at the Atelier Piece Unique, Carmen Selma presents mainly works by his series The great celebration of Spain. “These are paintings on bullfighting, religious festivals. Many works on childhood complete the gallery's selection. The artist explores the past to better understand who we are, what builds us. She does not seek the anecdote. “Memory is one of the fundamental pillars of my work. I am particularly interested in the discovery of the past, in which I immerse myself to try to apprehend the present. My painting poses political and social questions. The current demands of our societies join those of yesterday. I wonder a lot about the place of women. Carmen Selma works from old photographs, personal or anonymous, which she reinterprets freely. She imagines the story, the emotions of people captured by the lens, appropriating their expressions and gestures. If she thinks about her compositions in advance, she also lets herself be guided by her brush. “I like spontaneity. I establish a dialogue between the canvas and me. The artist paints in oils, often favoring large formats. “I use a technique from the past with a contemporary perspective. Past and present thus come together in form and substance. “My intention is to awaken attention, to call for observation and reflection in a context where dizzying immediacy seems to want everything!
