Artsper met with Adam Spychala, a young Berlin-based artist and designer renowned for his unique talent for mixing different art styles and media, creating harmonious and captivating atmospheres.

1. Hi Adam! Thank you for speaking with us today. Could you start by introducing yourself to our readers? How did your career as an artist and designer begin?

Hello, I am Adam, Interior designer, artist and owner of "studio adam" based in Berlin. My work focuses on world-building. Currently building my own digital world: warm, approachable, and design-focused, centered on interior design and art. I curate brands and artists for my interior, but also paint myself. Also, I am helping clients with branding services, visual research, and aesthetic videos that I post on my Instagram channel (@didyouseeadam).

I lived in New York City and Japan and drew a lot of inspiration from these places. New York City, in particular, truly inspires me and holds a special place in my heart and its energy continues to draw me back year after year. In Japan I lived in a buddhist temple for a couple of months (正願寺, Shuki, Oita, Japan) and still meditate every morning for 30 minutes on my living room rug, followed by a green tea. It's important to me to have inner peace and a balance, this is the basis for everything. In Japan I learned how to really pay attention to details, it adds so much depth and nuance to the world around us.

2. What is your work method when creating art and designing interiors? Do you have a similar process for both, or is it different?

When creating art and designing interiors, my approach balances structure with intuition. There are differences around client involvement and functional considerations when it comes to interior design. The art process is focused around finding inspiration, creating many sketches and color studies, before working on a canvas with music on and thoughts off. The interior design process is based on needs of the space and personal preference, a mood board, a color concept and furniture concept.  

3. What inspires you and how has your style changed over time?

I find a lot of inspiration in nature, paying attention to the surroundings. I'm always surprised how much you see when you are truly present. New York City, it's art scene and restaurant designs. Italian architecture and furniture design. The homes of creative people. Some people just have the magical eye for beauty. My style was more focused on mid-century modern with a limited color palette. For a couple of years I have been gravitating more towards Italian-Scandinavian-Japanese designs. The sophisticated elegance of Italian design, with the calm and cohesive Scandinavian aesthetics, paired with texture and attention to detail of Japanese design really hits the spot for me.  

4. What are some of your aspirations for the future of your artistic and design career? Are there any new projects or directions you're excited to explore?  

Currently I am very excited about a project for a media-based client, where I provide creative direction on content creation, visual research, based on color-analysis, competitor study and latest design trend analysis. More to come later in 2024.

5. Orange and blue are recurring shades in your work and curatorial choices. Can you tell us what draws you to these colors in particular? Is there any special meaning or intention behind this choice?  

Orange is such an underestimated color, the hue of the evening sun. A warm source of energy. A welcoming color. On the contrary, blue is my least favorite color (except Yves Klein blue), however it is the complementary color to orange, creating a contrast and making the warm colors even more powerful. Blue is a cool color and adds some freshness to the space/painting.

6. What is your favorite part or step of curating gallery walls?

Finding a new art piece that I fall in love with and imagining where I would hang it.  

7. What advice would you give to Artsper buyers who want to be inspired by your approach and choices to create a delicate and harmonious curation like yours?  

One step at a time. It took me years to get to where I am, and I am still on a journey. You have to love an art piece when you see it for the second time. Often you see a piece of art and you love it, but in many cases it is so simple and does not have layers, that you only love it at first glance. When coming back to it on another day, and you still love it, it's a match.

8. Traveling and living in cities like New York and Tokyo have had a considerable impact on your creation and style. Why have you chosen to settle in Berlin today? Do you sometimes feel the need to move elsewhere to find new inspiration?

At this point in time Berlin seems like the perfect base. It is creative and international, you're in Milan or Paris within a couple of hours and most importantly, it is closer to family. I do have the urge to move, but I like to be present and enjoy where I am. I am sure change will happen, sooner or later.
