Work from the period “Parallel worlds" (1978-1982)
As I approached my forty years (I was born in 1941), a first assessment was imposed on me. Should I continue with a surrealist inspiration by continually modifying reality? Or should I return to interpretations closer to nature?
In addition, I was confronted with another observation: the concerns of artists of my generation differed from mine. I was interested in their research and achievements, which we called Contemporary Art. However, they did not seduce me to the point of breaking with my own imagination.
If man needs benchmarks to give direction to his life, I had personally, and for a long time, been impressed by three thoughts, respectively from Nietzche, Goethe and Aristotle. We have art so as not to die from the truth. Art allows the accomplishment of everything that, in reality, life denies to man. And art is the joy of free men. So I wasn't afraid of being criticized by moving physical reality into parallel universes. I was not running away from it but shifting it by giving it other contours, or limbos, dotted with dreamlike symbols.
Always at ease in my esoteric research, I exploited dreams so that they release creative energy in my characters and have a deep resonance with the viewer. Giving shape to these buried reminiscences helped, as a painter, to simultaneously become actor, stage and audience.
Embracing my century and its content, I nevertheless felt free to avoid everyday life by biasing them. Building other projections amounted to crossing the Rubicon towards the forbidden and the secrets of the Great Architect.
In order to highlight these parallel worlds, I exploited the elements of nature. I redrew them in assemblages that were often distorted or made difficult to identify. Vertical or horizontal architectures frequently made up my funds. Moving volumes, full of life, animated my paintings. They released a mineral universe which clumped together, exploded and restructured itself with the intention of translating the phobia of men. Through the breathing of their dreams, my characters projected themselves into other pathological utopias. Antidotes to the mediocrity of their condition, their dreams became sources of prolongation of their existence by moving their desires towards new horizons. Capable of mimicry, these beings were no longer main subjects but integral parts of nature. They could become stone, tree or animal. Having reached a balance with men, nature imbued itself with their language and echoed their presence.
Naturally skeptical but capable of enthusiasm, I had projected our human condition into parallel lives where everyone could have expected better worlds. However, while, through their traumatic dreams, my characters projected themselves into other realities, the result turned out to be bitter. Their attempts at freedom ended in failure. In designing an Arcadia of plenitude, they only encountered cold and inhuman spaces, like dead ends. Refusing, like Icarus, to comply with the established order, they had crossed levels from which they could not return. Far from the light, they were lost in wandering lands. They wanted to be but found only emptiness in their lives.

Gilbert Sabatier is a painter, engraver, sculptor. A creator since 1960, he is the author of 19 periods ranging from figurative to contemporary research. His total work represents two thousand paintings, 800 sculptures and 250 engravings.
His work is a hypnotizing and protean universe that questions the art of our time in all its forms, colors and movements. Explorer of the impossible, alchemist of matter and adventurer of art, Sabatier has never stopped creating paintings, engravings, screen prints and sculptures, sometimes monumental, sometimes light.
From his figurative early works to his research on weightlessness and suspended time, from his paintings between dreams and reality to his quest for abstraction, from his fascination with the laws of the universe to the invention of a new genre, synthesis of all his obsessions, the artist opens up like never before.
Throughout his life, he tried to artistically express the aspirations and doubts of human beings in the face of an undeciphered universe. For those who discover his work to immerse themselves in the heart and mind of a resolutely free artist.
