Christine Hodgson

Christine Hodgson's work is multi-faceted. Like a manifesto advocating authenticity, her practice echoes the Automatist movement and aims to highlight the right to self-determination. Her visual research focuses on the notion of what we let show, what we see, what we hide from ourselves - from others, the part of ourselves that we stage.

Her painting practice unfolds in two stages. First, she allows the primary, instinctive gesture to emerge on the canvas, then gives way to a period of observation and latency. During this period, Hodgson scans the canvas for anything that might potentially emerge. The artist then chooses whether to accept the work as an abstraction, or to embark on a methodical process reminiscent of an archaeological dig, revealing in the depths of the material what she sees emerging.

In addition to her work on canvas, Hodgson uses mediums such as photography and digital tools to push the notion of the hidden/shown further. In so doing, she makes a link with the era in which we live, when our own image often becomes a commodified brand image. Consciously using her phone as a working tool (since it is often fused with and becomes an extension of her being), she impulsively hides portions of her acrylic works. Quickly. Instantly.
