Collector’s Guide
Lu Chong Min (呂聰敏) (1933-1994) is a Singapore painter, born in Malaysia in 1933, who
died in 1994 in Singapore.
Lise Cormery
writes the biography of the artist in her book "The Art of Post-War Ecole de Paris" since "Lu Chong
Min lived in Paris and studied in Beaux-Arts de Paris from 1953 until 1959, and
that sojourn was important for the development of his artistic evolution. Lu
Chong Min was considered as being the protege of professor Liu Kang, Master of
The Nanyang style of painting, a synthesis of Western watercolor and oil
painting techniques with Chinese ink traditions, also known as Nanyang art or
the Nanyang school. It was an art movement practiced by migrant Chinese
painters in Singapore from the 1940s to 1960s, who renounced ties with China to
settle across Malaya and in Singapore forever.
This is in this
historical context that Lu Chong Min 呂聰敏 was
recognized as the most brilliant artist of Malaysia. Already famous, his
departure for Paris thanks to a sponsorship was the subject of an important
article in the national press of Singapore. After his return to Singapore the
painter remained prestigious and regarded as the brightest of Malaysian artists
who studied in Paris.
While in Paris,
Lu Chong Min had Solo Shows in the international Art Gallery of Raymond Duncan
(1919-1966), L'Akademia, 31, rue de Seine, Paris, where his famous painting
"Cubist Venus of Singapore", oil on canvas painted in Paris was
exhibited. Lu Chong Min 呂聰敏 won "The New-York
Price" of Raymond Duncan in 1957, with a Solo Show in Raymond Duncan
Gallery, New York, 303, East 51st Street with a catalog published by the
Akademia, Paris. Lu Chong Min 呂聰敏 was exhibited as
well in Raymond and Ligoa Duncan Gallery, 22 East 72nd Street, New York.
In 1997 Salon
Pont des Arts opened by Christie's Asia, with director Philip Ng, focusing on
artists from Malaysia and Singapore trained in Paris Beaux-Arts, showed the art
of Lu Chong Min. In 2015, The National Visual Arts Gallery (NVAG) of Kuala
Lumpur, shows "Paris – French ConneXion", with paintings illustrating
the story of Malaysians seeking art tutelage in France, their struggles,
impressions and inspirations chronicled in a major survey involving Lu Chong
Min, with the Curator and Art Critic Ooi Kok Chuen. In 2018 "S'Recollect
Show" in the National Museum Art Gallery of Singapore shows Post War Ecole
de Paris Singapore artists with Lu Chong Min (呂聰敏)."
"This very
enigmatic oil on canvas, "The Paris Cubist Venus of Singapore" by Lu
Chong Min 呂聰敏 was
painted in Paris while the artist lived there in the 50's is. This muse painted
in the cubist style, by thick layers gives a sculptural relief to this Venus
and creates a very peculiar, deep and obsessive beauty. Modern and western by
the pictural treatment this chef d'œuvre nevertheless remains majestic and in
the Asia tradition, as an ancestral goddess. This is why this exceptional
painting was titled "Cubist Venus of Singapore" "La Vénus
cubiste de Singapour". This painting has been exhibited at Akademia Galerie
Raymond Duncan 31, rue de Seine Paris (1919-1966), Galerie Raymond et Ligoa
Duncan Gallery, 22 East 72nd street New York, Galerie Lise Cormery Paris,
1993."
