En contra del deseo propio de los fotógrafos de capturar "el momento decisivo" alrededor de la década de 1960, los fotógrafos comienzan a apreciar lo imaginario, lo irreal, lo mágico, lo maravilloso y lo invisible. Lo fantástico seduce tanto por un aspecto monstruoso y cruel, como mágico e ingenuo. Hay artistas que se han especializado completamente en este género, como Jérôme Bosch, Cindy Sherman, Pierre et Gilles, Sarah Moon, Grégory Crewdson, Deborah Hally, Jeff Bark, Desirée Dolton, Erwin Olaf, Bronek Kozka y Vivien Racault.
