La photographie est souvent associée au réel et au vraisemblable. Le fantastique est un thème qui fut très vite adopté par le cinéma et la littérature, mais il eu un succès tardif dans la photographie qui est un médium davantage apprécié au contraire pour ses capacités documentaires et réalistes. Des artistes se sont complètement spécialisés dans ce genre tel que Jérôme Bosch, Cindy Sherman, Pierre et Gilles, Sarah Moon, Grégory Crewdson, Deborah Hally, Jeff Bark, Desirée Dolton, Erwin Olaf, Bronek Kozka et Vivien Racault.
