CORPS ET AME GALLERY presents from February 18 to March 15, 2022, OMBRES & LUMIERES, a DUO SHOW dedicated to the 9th Art with two comic book artists and scriptwriters: Enki BILAL & Milo MANARA.
With the OMBRES & LUMIERES exhibition, CORPS ET AME GALLERY wishes to associate these two undisputed masters of comics. Two artists with very distinct universes... anticipation Science-Fiction and politics for BILAL, eroticism associated with historical periods for MANARA. Singular artists with universes of their own but who share a common taste for sensuality in the treatment of their characters.
About the Artists:
ENKI BILAL:
Enes Bilalovic, Born in the former Yugoslavia, in Belgrade (Serbia) Enki Bilal moved to France in 1960 where he took courses for a short period at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Versatile artist, BILAL is a Science-Fiction author mainly recognized in the world of comics. From 1972 he will meet Pierre Christin, screenwriter and novelist, together they will carry out several publication projects in the magazine Pilote then in the famous comic book magazine Métal Hurlant.
Enki BILAL is a complete and singular artist. His style is marked by a reduced palette rendered by a gray and bluish atmosphere which will become his trademark over time. Carrying messages that can be worrying, this blue sometimes imposes itself as a note of hope or benevolence. Everything seems cold with BILAL, his sketches outlined in black almost systematically refer to the anguish of a society dominated by totalitarianism, a theme that will be widely present in his work, as well as others such as religious obscurantism, climate change or collective memory…
Enki BILAL practices painting, graphic design and illustration but will also indulge in the world of cinema, a taste that is found even in the construction of his boards largely dominated by this influence. He will create some sets for "La vie est un Roman" by Alain Resnais in 1982 and some graphic research in 1985 for "Le Nom de la Rose" by Jean-Jacques Annaud, based on the novel by Umberto Eco. Screenwriter, BILAL will direct three feature films: Bunker Palace Hotel (1989), Tykho Moon (1997) and Immortel (ad vitam) (2004).
MILO MANARA:
Born in 1945 in Luson in northern Italy, Milo MANARA is a comic book author and screenwriter. He will begin his career as an assistant sculptor in the studio of the Spanish artist Berrocal where he will discover an overflowing passion for comics. The figures of the sulphurous Barbarella created by Jean-Claude Forest or even the adventures of Jodelle by Guy Peellaert will be a real trigger for the author, from then on, in a self-taught way Milo MANARA will fully engage in the universe of comic for adults.
Women will take a central place in MANARA's stories. The author will experience a first success by making boards that will be regularly published in fumetti (small booklets of comics popular in Italy).
His first erotic story dates from 1968, a genre that will make him successful. Indeed from the 1980s and for more than 50 years of career MANARA will become THE reference draftsman in the genre of eroticism. Milo MANARA is also recognized for his taste for adventure as well as for historical stories, he will produce several such as "An Indian summer" and "El gaucho" co-directed with Hugo Pratt the author of Corto Maltese. More recently, from 2015 to 2018 Milo MANARA will produce several volumes on the history of the famous painter of chiaroscuro Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggi known as "Le Caravaggio".
