The link between art and fashion is undeniable. Though fashion is often associated with models and catwalks, it has undoubtedly also been historically used as a form of artistic expression. The Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries aimed to break down the imposed barrier between design and fine art, which had become increasingly separate due to mass manufacturing. This placed more value on the handmade, unique object, including hand-crafted garments and jewelry. Thanks to the Arts and Crafts movement, fashion design became increasingly recognised as an art form equal to that of the fine arts, dissolving the hierarchy that had existed previously between them.
There are many artists who are inseparable from the clothes they wear, and many who use fashion as inspiration for their art. Artist Frida Kahlo is intrinsically linked to the world of fashion – not only because her iconic portrait features on clothing around the world, but also because of her deep interest in and experimentation with her own personal style. She is known for her daring outfits, blending cultures, colors and styles to create original looks that expressed her artistic intent through a medium other than paint. Likewise, clothes often wove their way into Kahlo's artworks, many of which were self portraits.
Artsper has curated a selection of the best contemporary artworks that take inspiration from the world of fashion. Alia Ali uses photography to explore textiles through color, form and pattern, producing a unique and vibrant visual language, while artist Joanna Layla produces dynamic fashion illustrations using the medium of paint. Check out our selection of works that have a strong sense of style today!
