Artwork location: France
This captivating artwork depicts an intimate and familiar scene of urban life seen through the steamy window of a train carriage. The composition of the image, simple but deeply evocative, captures a moment of quiet contemplation between two passengers deep in thought. The first thing that catches the eye is the stark contrast between the darkness of the carriage interior and the areas illuminated by the fluorescent lights of the compartment. The effect of the fog on the windows creates a floating sensation, as if the silhouettes of the passengers are suspended in time. This artistic blur suggests the isolation and anonymity often felt in public spaces, despite the physical proximity of the individuals. The figures of the characters, although indistinct, remain powerfully expressive. On the left, a person is absorbed in reading or writing, the slightly hunched posture suggesting an inner intensity. On the right, another person is seen in profile, gazing at a distant point, perhaps lost in a telephone conversation or an introspective reverie. The artist uses a dull and dark colour palette, reinforcing the sense of melancholy and solitude. Shades of grey, brown and black dominate, subtly enhanced by artificial light, creating an atmosphere that is both realistic and mysterious. The hazy reflections on the window add an extra dimension, highlighting the interaction between the passengers’ inner world and the invisible but present outside world. The uniqueness of this work lies in its ability to evoke complex emotions and elicit a sense of connection with the universal human experience. The viewer is invited to project their own thoughts and feelings onto the anonymous figures, transforming the scene into a mirror of their own inner world. In short, this masterful depiction of an everyday moment, magnified by the play of light and texture, offers a poignant reflection on the shared solitude in urban public spaces. She manages to capture the fleeting beauty and depth of ordinary moments.

French photographer Julie Peiffer, born in 1967, lives and works between Paris and Nancy.
Julie Peiffer is a self-taught artist who began her artistic career in 2020. After years of keen observation of society, she found in photography a powerful means to explore social issues that concern her, shedding light on inequalities, particularly those affecting women. She strives to capture the immateriality of feelings and make them visible through her art.
After working as an editor in magazine journalism in Paris, Julie Peiffer turned to photography following the 2015 attacks, driven by an urgent need to capture the city during those dark times.
Since then, Julie Peiffer’s work has delved into feminine identity, exploring the depths of this intimate and often unknown realm.
Her photographs harmoniously blend the language of the female body with light, revealing an underlying vitality and melancholy—core elements of human existence.
She constantly explores the materiality of the image, creating photographs that transcend mere visuals to become almost pictorial, offering a unique sensory experience.
In 2023, one of her works was included in the HERMÈS Foundation collection, and she joined the masterclass of photographer FLORE.
Her works are also present in private collections in France, Canada, Dubai, and Australia.
In 2024, one of her works will be part of the Artcurial sale for the Foch Foundation.
