Maciej Woltman

Maciej Woltman (1952) - Polish painter and poster artist. In 1982 he graduated from the State College of Fine Arts in Poznań. He obtained his diploma in the fields of poster and book illustration in the studio of prof. W. Swierzy and painting in the studio of prof. J. Świtka. He started as a graphic designer, back in the years 1980-90 when he designed the film posters and book illustrations for the film publishing houses, e.g. the then largest in Poland Polfilm. For the poster to the movie "Ballad of Narayama" he was awarded the 3rd prize by the Hollywood Reporter 1986. His evocative and expressive posters such as "Gandhi", "Star-80", "Princess" or "Ballad of Narayama" allowed him to successfully appear on the art scene. In the depths of his soul however, as he says about himself, he is a painter and this painting, together with his specific ways of depicting, dominated Maciej Woltman's work from the 1990s to the present. His artworks are consistently focused on man and his corporeality, one time they reveal the sensual nature of life and the physical beauty of a human, and another time they show the fragility and the limitations of a human body. His drawings and paintings never accurately reflect reality, but the artist intentionally reaches for the internal portraits from the imagination like dreams, desires, fears, which he then builds with a strong line and colour palette.  

The winner of the 3rd prize by The Hollywood Reporter (1986) for the poster for the film "Ballad of Narayama" and the Artistic Award of the City of Szczecin Poland (2007).

Participant of numerous individual and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad. His paintings, drawings and graphics are in private collections and public institutions.
