Sculpture Bronze
La technique pour confectionner des sculptures en bronze a peu évolué depuis l'Antiquité. Le sculpteur modèle d'abord la cire, puis il la recouvre d'argile, fait couler le bronze, alliage de cuivre et d'étain, et enfin brise la terre-cuite pour ne laisser que l'objet en bronze. Très appréciée par les sculpteurs, ce matériau est robuste et survit parfaitement en extérieur. Sa superposition à la cire laisse transparaître énormément de détails contrairement à la sculpture en acier. Certaines nuances de couleurs peuvent être travaillées grâce aux patines.
C'est en Mésopotamie, proche de l'Iran actuel, que le bronze commence à être utilisé pour représenter des animaux dans l'art sacré. En Egypte, il est employé pour incarner des divinités mais aussi pour les statuettes placées dans les tombes des défunts.
La Grèce Antique donnera au bronze son importance dans l'histoire de l'art lorsque ses artisans commenceront à sculpter des figures humaines et des divinités avec une réalisme impressionnant. De nombreuses pièces sont importées à Rome où la production de sculptures en bronze se développe. Très vite, des sculptures de bronze revêtent les théâtres et les maisons cossues. Admiratifs des compétences grecques, les Romains ordonnent des commandes à des marchands qui copient les moules des statues.
À la naissance du christianisme, l'évangélisation et la construction d'églises sont les priorités. La création de bronzes est remplacée par celle de sculptures en pierre pour décorer les églises. C'est seulement au 14ème siècle que les chefs-d'œuvre sont redécouverts lors de fouilles de sites archéologiques italiens. Un siècle plus, tard, Brunelleschi et Ghiberti lancent le coup d'envoi de la Renaissance en décorant les portes du Baptistère en bronze. C'est d'abord Donatello, inspiré du style antique, qui excelle dans l'art de transmettre des émotions à travers des sculptures de bronze, puis Verrocchio, son élève (et maître de Léonard de Vinci !) qui le succède. À cette époque, même si la pratique se répand en Europe, elle se concentre principalement en Italie où se joue une compétition entre les sculpteurs pour obtenir le résultat le plus convaincant.
Au 16ème siècle, l'artiste flamand Jean de Bologne s'impose comme le maître incontesté du bronze de son époque. Il sera l'artiste le plus copié du 17ème siècle et on lui doit en partie la diffusion des sculptures de bronze en Europe. En Italie, la production de sculpture en bronze sera assez constante quelle que soit l'époque, contrairement à la France où cette technique dépendra beaucoup des régimes politiques. C'est lorsque Louis XIV invite des sculpteurs à sa cour (notamment pour décorer Versailles) que le bronze réapparaît dans la création, mais plus en tant qu'Art de Cours.
La sculpture de bronze ressurgit au 19ème siècle avec Rodin et Camille Claudel, puis avec le Cubisme et le mouvement Art Déco. C'était une matière dispendieuse, lourde et chère à la vente, son utilisation est donc moins courante aux 20ème et 21ème siècle, mais certains artistes l'utilisent tout de même : Marc Quinn, Giuseppe Penone, Germaine Richier, Alberto Giacometti et ses étranges silhouettes longilignes, le bronze animalier de Brigitte Téman, les compressions de César Baldaccini, les papillons de Philippe Pasqua et les danseurs d'Olivier Messas mais également des sculptures de natures morte en bronze. Les sculptures en bronze sont réalisées à partir d'une série de moules en cire, dans lesquels le sculpteur verse du bronze fondu pour créer la sculpture finale.
Le bronze est utilisé pour les sculptures car il se dilate juste avant de durcir, ce qui permet d'accentuer les détails les plus fins. Le bronze se rétracte ensuite légèrement en refroidissant, ce qui permet de retirer facilement le moulage.
On peut déterminer si une sculpture est en bronze en testant si un aimant s'y colle, car le fer est magnétique. Le bronze n'a pas non plus la capacité de rouiller, de sorte qu'une sculpture en bronze ne présentera pas de signes de corrosion à sa surface.
