TAKI 183 THE MAN WHO CREATED GRAFFITI CULTURE IN NYC!
Graffiti and street artists around the world know the name that started it all: TAKI 183. Growing up on 183rd Street in Washington Heights, north of Manhattan, TAKI's simple signature caught the attention of a reporter and , in the summer of 1971, an article was published. published in the New York Times. TAKI was the first New Yorker to become famous for his graffiti. The floodgates have opened.
In the summer of 1969, Demetrius was bored. He lived uptown, north of Harlem, in a neighborhood populated by Greek children, like himself, but also by a growing population of Cubans, Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. The Savage Nomads gang was headquartered a block away, but they didn't bother the locals. One afternoon that summer, Demetrius' friend Phil visited the 183rd and had news for Demetrius and his friend Greg. A kid from Inwood, 20 blocks north, wrote down his name and street number: JULIO 204. Demetrius and Greg thought it was pretty cool. They all started writing their names. Demetrius wrote "TAKI", a diminutive for a number of Greek names, and his street number.
In the fall of 1970, TAKI went to high school in Midtown Manhattan, taking the 1 train there and back. Along the way, he wrote TAKI 183 on subway stations and wherever he thought would be a good place. He had seen the election posters and stickers plastered around the city in 1968, and again in 1970, and imitated their campaign tactics.
When he started working as a downtown delivery boy, carrying packages of high-end cosmetics to posh places like the Upper East Side, he held the box up to lampposts, using it as a cover for that he wrote his name.
It was probably one of those Upper East Side tags that caught the attention of the New York Times reporter, who found TAKI near his home. On July 21, 1971, TAKI's fate was sealed: "TAKI 183 Spawns Pen Pals," the Times article headlined. This is how TAKI 183 becomes the father of contemporary graffiti. His legend grew and rumors spread that TAKI even spray-painted a Secret Service car and the Statue of Liberty.

Taki 183 is one of the most influential graffiti writers. His "tag" was short for Dimitaki, a Greek alternative for his birth-name Dimitrios, and the number 183 came from his address on 183rd Street in Washington Heights. On July 21, 1971, The New York Times ran an article about him on the front page of its inside section, titled "Taki 183" Spawns Pen Pals. Taki 183's newspaper fame spurred competitive tagging in NYC as his tag was being mimicked by hundreds of youth across the five boroughs. The people who got their names up the most and developed signature tags became heroes in their communities. Graffiti became a way for many young kids to communicate and express themselves[citation needed]. Their graffiti is a vital part of their culture[citation needed] and without Taki 183 and its media recognition, it might not exist today[citation needed].
Although Taki 183 was the first to be showcased in a major publication it is said that Julio 204 began writing his tag in NYC first. But Julio did not write outside his own neighborhood and this is arguably the reason why he never received the credits and media-attention Taki 183 did.
Taki 183 was last known to be the owner of a foreign car repair shop. In an interview with the New York Daily News of April 9, 1989, he talked about his retirement as a graffiti writer: "As soon as I got into something more productive in my life, I stopped. Eventually I got into business, got married, bought a house, had a kid. Didn't buy a station wagon, but I grew up, you could say that."

Where can I have my order delivered?
