Born in 1957 in Concord, United States, George Condo is an important figure in American painting . He lives and works in New York. His career began with a job at Andy Warhol 's factory.
George Condo inherits the influences of Velàsquez, David , Picasso , Bacon , Dali, Pollock … but shapes a very singular abstract figurative art. The traditional European art that he discovered during his studies in Germany guides his work. Cubism mixes with American pop culture. He became friends with the artists of the Beat Generation as well as the painters Keith Haring , Jean-Michel Basquiat and Julain Schnabel .
George Condo composes portraits , vanities, still lifes , sculptures , collages... Recently, he created a series of portraits, in homage to Jazz musicians. The artist defines his art as “artificial realism", “the realistic representation of what is artificial". George Condo dislocates bodies by shaping a playful, surreal form. Schizophrenia hovers over its beings tinged with irony Emotions are exalted to the point of bordering on clownish or disturbing character. Sexuality is also exacerbated. The madness of beings is not watered down but emerges from these bodily decompositions.
Felix Guattari says about him: “in short, you are re-inventing modern art, rather than massively denying it. You demonstrate through your unconscious "acting out" that painting, as an innovative process of producing subjectivity, is still and always possible, on the condition of being taken up in its nascent state. »
“My main desire is to banish all the insipid affectations of everyday life: those which cling like parasites, until the last moment, to the white and blank canvas (...). Representing “it" as “that", that's victory," claims the artist.
George Condo had his first personal exhibition in 1983. His works are displayed in the most prestigious places and are the subject of acquisitions in numerous private collections. He signed a particularly disconcerting and disconcerting portrait of the Queen at the Tate Modern in London. George Condo participates in key events: biennial, fair… He collaborates with many artistic personalities… He notably illustrates “the beautiful and dark twisted fantasy" of Kanye West.
