The Venice Biennale
First established in 1895, the Venice Biennale is a cultural institution based in Venice, Italy. The organization has supported the arts for over 120 years and is at the center of research and advancement of contemporary art throughout the global creative landscape. The institution does this through a number of initiatives which include various events that focus on specific sectors, such as arts, cinema, architecture, music, theater, and dance. The Venice Biennale now welcomes more than 500,000 visitors in a span of several months, making it the world's biggest art exhibition.
The 60th International Art Exhibition returns to Venice from April 2Oth to November 24th, 2024. The 2024 edition is curated by Adriano Pedrosa. The Biennale Arte 2024's main focus is artists who are themselves foreigners, immigrants, expatriates, diasporic, exiled, or refugees.
The title of the 2024 edition is, “Stranieri Ovunque -Foreigners Everywhere" which is drawn from a series of works started in 2004 by the Paris-born and Palermo-based collective Claire Fontaine. The works consist of neon sculptures in different colors with the words 'Foreigners Everywhere' written in many languages. The phrase is a reference to the name of a Turin collective called “Stranieri Ovunque" who fought racism and xenophobia in Italy in the early 2000s.
The Exhibition will take place in the Central Pavilion (Giardini) and in the Arsenale. With a total of 332 participants, it will feature two sections: the Nucleo Contemporaneo and the Nucleo Storico.
Do you want to visit the 2024 Venice Biennale but cannot travel to Italy? We've got you covered: several artists included in this year's edition of the Venice Biennale are also available on Artsper!
