Artwork location: France

This original lithograph N°3/100 - signed lower right, in pencil, by the artist, as well as on the publisher's certificate, dated March 19, 1986, is a magnificent representation of a Mediterranean coastal village which captures the essence and tranquility of the place. This artwork uses a vibrant, contrasting color palette to illustrate the serene beauty of the local architecture. In the foreground, the ground paved with yellow stones leads the eye towards the background, where a row of white houses with flat roofs proudly stands. The fineness of the lines and the clarity of the colors create a luminescent and welcoming space, bathed in the dazzling light of the Mediterranean sun. Shadows cast by buildings add realistic depth and dimension to the scene. The architectural details are striking, including the blue balustrades that stand elegantly on the left of the image, recalling the distinctive features of Cycladic buildings. In the background, a small church with its bold red dome stands out from the whole, adding an exceptional pictorial touch to the composition. The garlands of colorful flags that flutter lightly in the wind give this scene a festive and lively dimension, suggesting an atmosphere of celebration or local party. The contrast between the deep blue of the sky and the sea on the horizon with the sparkling white of the buildings creates a feeling of purity and relaxation, typical of island landscapes. The balance and harmony in the composition is impressive, each element is in its place, and together they create a captivating painting that immediately transports the viewer on an enchanting Mediterranean journey.

Presentation

Jean-Claude Quilici was born in Marseilles in 1941. He studied fine arts and discovered masters of Provençal painting.

His painting aesthetically resembles the works of Provençal artists. However, Jean-Claude Quilici doesn't only represent the Provence, but all the landscapes he admires and those which inspire him. These mainly pertain to his trips in USA, Spain, Morocco...

Jean-Claude Quilici exhibited for the first time in 1958. He earned international fame. The artist received several awards like « la mention spéciale » from the Grand Prix Jury at the Avignon Festival. He was acknowledged worldwide: he exhibited in USA, Japan. During his career, he also took care of public orders for the Université de Corte and Marseilles subway. In 1997, the artist created opera decors "Mireille" by Gounod for a co-production of the Opera in Marseilles and Bordeaux.
