SfB are the initials of Stéphane franck Berthelot, born in La Rochelle in 1973. He lives and works between Paris and Arles. His work mixes several techniques (digital, photographic and graphic) and leaves a large place to the elements of colours which draw an often abstract universe where his personal geometry expresses a kind of poetic and vibrant imbalance. He works with the play of light, colour and form in which the eye is lost, blurred and tries to settle. His works are present in several countries (Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Australia...) but it is his PARIS-MEMPHIS series that reveals him to the general public during the first confinement in spring 2020. While everything stops and the city freezes in silence, Stéphane Franck Berthelot takes photos of this Paris that has become immobile, which he reinvents in the Memphis style, the famous design movement of the 1980s founded by Ettorre Sottsass.

Presentation

SfB are the initials of Stéphane Franck Berthelot, born in La Rochelle, France, in 1973. His education (business school) and career (music editor, communications director for a major media group) led him to Paris, where he lives and works. While his decision to devote himself to creating is a recent one, his portfolio is vast and his work is present in several countries today: Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, Portugal, Australia and France - where he exhibits in Paris and at Serpette market in the Puces de Saint-Ouen. One of his pieces - “Néons" - is even on show in the Salon de la Cartographie at the Palais de l'Elysée, the French presidential palace.

His work blends several techniques - digital, photography and graphic - with a strong focus on colour elements, creating an often abstract world in which his personal geometry expresses a poetic, vibrant imbalance. He uses interplays between light and colours, within which your eyes become lost, blurred, seeking somewhere to land. The technique itself disappears - pencil, ink and pastel on paper or digital brush on tablet edited later with a one-off print on artistic photographic paper using pigment inks – it is never easy to perceive in what form and in what way the final piece appears to your eyes. His light is not that of a figurative artist, his warm forms permeate the canvas, like sinking into velvet.

From his “Néons" series, both “digital and musical" (to quote a major forerunner of  electronic music), which allows him to create groundbreaking colour figures that seem to come to life, like at the heart of a flame, to pieces whose pure abstraction outlines a path for us to take, they seem to come from an ancient dream awakened by an all-new technicity.

His suspended figures, like prints on disconcerting backgrounds, vibrate like chimeras, where the spectre of fading into unconsciousness weighs like a fear.

Attentive and passionate about modernity, he is obsessed with fleeing a past in which everything would be an inevitability, abandoned and forgotten. He endeavours to find a way out from an intimate labyrinth where nothing ever disappears, but where everything can be renewed. A quest for light and brightness.

The labyrinthine succession of these periods of creation highlights his refusal to be closed in, even by his own references. The Figure, his original omnipresent signature, becomes a dragon to be fought. Tomorrow must remain a blank canvas.

His work takes shape like a puzzle without any model for which you feel that there will be no final piece. SfB is constantly offering new and modern visions of a fragile and sometimes inhuman contemporary world. plusieurs prix récompensant son travail.
