Dominique Rayou began sculpting as a self-taught artist in the 1980s, discovering the work of a relative. Since then, he has never stopped, alternating sculpture on wood, bronzes and marbles, with a predilection for direct carving which proceeds by removing the material, prohibits or almost any correction and requires very great concentration.
Dominique Rayou is particularly fond of marble, the metamorphic stone par excellence: like any mineral, and perhaps more than any other, marble is not neutral, we must understand its nature, taking into account its grain, of its color, of its fragilities. There is therefore an equal relationship between the material, the artist and his concept, as a series of continuous and mutual contributions between them, to which is of course added the part of acquired experience, the "craft ".
Technique therefore remains one of the components of the creative act, it is never an end in itself and remaining in harmony with the material prohibits any temptation to perform. Likewise, for Dominique Rayou, the concept must never be too dominant, as it can sometimes be in avant-garde art. Dominique Rayou's sculptures illustrate a double requirement and a consideration of the human and the abstract, the visible and the invisible, of the effective as well as emotional presence at the same time as a reflection on what is still unknown to us.
The theme of the human body is favored, not in its entirety, but by focusing the creation on partial representations: hands, arms and especially busts, isolated or in pairs. The figuration is itself associated with geometric shapes which in some way materialize the mental projections of the artist. His work then quite naturally joins our own concerns and reflects, through the search for harmony in shapes and proportions and a more abstract fragmentation, the artist's attention to our human condition, to our emotions as much as 'to our aspirations.
