Collector’s Guide
Jean-Loup Gautreau lives in Sète and works between Toulouse and Paris.
Upon graduation, he assisted photographers such as Roger Prigent linked to Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Marc Hispart for Elle in New York.
In the early 1980s, he worked as a reporter photographer for the famous Agence Française de Presse. His photos share the highlights of sporting events in international conflicts.
His quality as a photographer is forged through experience working for prestigious agencies until being rewarded twice by the University of Missouri.
The sharp eye and the trained lens, his photos take a more artistic turn.
His creations are presented in publications and thematic exhibitions conveying his astonishment for our environment.
The study of its outline enhances the evolution of our gaze, a common landscape becomes a particular work that deserves concentration.
Among his achievements, the series "Varda by Gautreau" attracts attention.
Since March 29, 2019, the artist has taken over the reins of the news by bringing out the photos from his meeting with the filmmaker. During two months of filming “Agnès Beaches”, the team worked under the gaze of the photographer. Twenty black and white photographic pieces illustrate all the humility, showing her in her role as a careful director.
Parallel to the film where the river of his life has come up like a self-portrait animated by the camera. The photos become witnesses and windows of a bygone era where eyes are interfering. Each spectator lets curiosity guide them in order to discover missing information in search of forgotten detail. The series makes Agnes Varda the common element present on all the pieces. It is the structure of the photographer's work.
