Artwork location: Brazil
This artwork captures a striking urban scene that juxtaposes architectural monotony with the dynamic existence of its inhabitants. The piece prominently features a vast, multi-storied building with a stark, yellow-ish facade. The repetitive vertical and horizontal lines of the countless windows create a rhythm that is both hypnotic and emblematic of modernist architecture. The structure dominates the composition with its grid of uniformly spaced windows, each revealing a glimpse into the lives of the people residing within. Some windows showcase individuals going about their daily routines, offering a narrative of everyday urban life. Despite the apparent monotony of the architecture, the human presence injects elements of curiosity and liveliness. A striking aspect of the scene is the green elevated structure in the foreground. This element, possibly a viaduct or pedestrian overpass, introduces a contrasting horizontal break in the composition and adds a sense of depth to the artwork. Below, a group of tiny figures congregates, suggesting a moment of social interaction or public gathering, lending further depth to the narrative. Wires and poles subtly dissect the artwork, adding layers of complexity and highlighting the ubiquitous presence of urban infrastructure. The interaction between the rigid architectural form and the organic dispersal of human figures creates a fascinating tension, compelling the viewer to reflect on the juxtaposition of the built environment and human existence within it. The overall muted color palette, dominated by yellows and greens, evokes a feeling of ordinary, everyday urban reality while also underscoring the monotony of city living. This artwork masterfully captures the essence of urban life, presenting a mundane yet captivating observation of the symbiosis between humans and their architectural habitats. Tamanini is a keen observer. He likes his city and manages like few others to convey the beauty of the megacity of São Paulo despite its complexity.
The artist is painting a marathon that is taking place on the viaduct called "Minhocão" that crosses part of the city of São Paulo. This viaduct is closed on Sundays when only pedestrians are allowed to use.

He began his career as a visual artist aged 19. Self-taught, at the start he received orientation from the painter Lise Forell with whom he maintains a relationship of profound friendship until today. His first exhibitions date from 1971 when he carried out an individual exhibition at the Mini Galeria USIS, São Paulo and participated in the collective Bilder aus Brasilien, at the Holtzinger Gallery, Munich, Germany. In 1998, he carried out an exhibition with the support of the Secretaria da Cultura de São Paulo which was also set up in Santos and Curitiba. In 1986, he took part in the exhibition Brazilian Naïve Paintings organized by the Partners of Americas and with the sponsorship of JP Morgan, which itinerated through various North-American cities throughout more than 4 years.
He was selected to compete in the Naïve Art Contest in Canada in 1993 and 1994 (Gallery Jeaninne Blais) and in Morges, Switzerland in 1983 and 1992 (Galerie Pro Arte Kasper). His paintings are regularly promoted in France by Galerie Jacqueline Bricard, and in Brazil, by Galeria Jacques Ardies, São Paulo.
His themes are basically the city of São Paulo that he portrays in a beautiful and attractive way, with the marine landscapes of our coast where man, usually nude, is represented perfectly integrated within a pure, beautiful and peaceful nature, and life in the slums is shown as a pleasant place to live, filled with children flying kites, cats on rooftops and playful dogs, all highlighted by the use of solid colours in sophisticated gradients of tones.
