Biography

Sarah Moon is a celebrated French fashion photographer, widely known for her distinctive, painterly approach to photography, which emerged in London during the 1970s. Born Marielle Warin on November 17, 1941, in Vichy, France, she fled occupied France with her Jewish family during her teenage years, seeking refuge in England. Moon initially began her career as a model, using the name Marielle Hadengue in Paris and London. However, by 1970, she transitioned into photography, adopting the name Sarah Moon, a move that would solidify her reputation as one of the most innovative and influential photographers in the fashion world. Moon's photographs are renowned for their ethereal, almost dreamlike qualities, often incorporating jewel tones, soft focus, and a sense of magical realism. Her work has been described as both visually captivating and emotionally evocative, with many of her images conveying a sense of nostalgia and otherworldliness.

In recent years, Moon's work has continued to evolve, as she has embraced new challenges in both photography and cinema. Her more recent exhibitions have explored themes of memory, time, and the passage of life, and her work continues to captivate audiences worldwide. In 2021, a retrospective of Moon's work was held at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, where many of her iconic images were displayed alongside new, never-before-seen pieces. As an artist, Moon remains a significant influence on contemporary photographers and visual artists, celebrated for her ability to blend fine art sensibilities with commercial photography.

Throughout her illustrious career, Moon has worked with major fashion houses, including Chanel, Dior, Comme des Garçons, and Cacharel, contributing to high-profile campaigns and iconic editorial spreads in Vogue. She is perhaps most famous for being the first woman to photograph the Pirelli calendar in 1972, a milestone in the male-dominated world of fashion photography. In addition to her commercial work, Sarah Moon has become deeply involved in gallery exhibitions and film projects, using photography as a medium for fine art exploration. Her accolades include the prestigious Clio Award in 1984 and the Grand Prix National de la Photographie in 1995, solidifying her status in the art world.
